Real Exchange Rate Levels, Productivity and Demand Shocks Evidence from a Panel of 14 Countries by Menzie Chinn

چکیده
This paper investigates the determinants of the real exchange rate using a panel of disaggregated data for the OECD countries. It also marries two literatures -one which uses panel data to measure relationships between changes in exchange rates to changes in the determinants, and the other which uses cointegration techniques to measure the long-run relationship between the level of the exchange rate and the level of the determining factors. The previous panel studies cannot account for deviations from long-run trend levels, while the extant literature using time series cointegration techniques can only intermittently detect and measure posited relationships. Estimating the relationships in levels is an interesting enterprise because it allows one, in principle, to calculate trend real exchange rates. After surveying the previous literature, a dynamic model of the real exchange rate is used to motivate the empirical exercise. In examining this problem, we will exploit recent developments in the econometric analysis of nonstationary variables in panel data. The results indicate that under certain assumptions it is easier to detect cointegration in panel data than in the available time series; moreover, the estimates of reversion to trend are also estimated with greater precision. The most empirically successful models include productivity measures, government spending ratios, and either the terms of trade, or the real price of oil. Using this latter model, we find that the implied equilibrium exchange rates indicate less overvaluation of the dollar than that implied by a naive version of purchasing power parity.

This paper documents the evidence for a fiscal model of the Yen/Dollar real exchange rate over the 1974-1994 period. Cointegrating relationships between the real exchange rate and productivity, government spending and the real price of oil are estimated using the Johansen (1988) and Stock-Watson (1993) procedures. The neoclassical fixed-factors fiscal model of Rogoff (1992) is found to have som...

The exchange rate plays an essential role for firms which export goods and import raw materials. In this paper, the effects of real specific exchange rate fluctuations in imports, exports and aggregate trade on industry sector, chemical and transportation industries outputs in 49 OIC countries were investigated by using a panel data model over 1990-2014. Particularly, this paper presents eviden...
متن کاملMacroeconomic Effects of the Terms of Trade Shocks: Evidence from OPEC
This paper evaluates the impact of the positive terms of trade (TOT) Shock on macroeconomic variables, using panel data for the six OPEC major oil exporting countries during 1989-2005. The findings indicate that the positive TOT shocks have the small and negative impact on savings and on the trade balance. Nevertheless, it has a positive impact on investment (specifically private investment) an...

The Balassa-Samuelson effect is usually seen as the prime explanation of the continuous real appreciation of central and east European (CEE) transition countries' currencies against their western counterparts. The response of a small country's real exchange rate to various shocks is derived in a simple model. It is shown that productivity shocks work not only through a Balassa-type supply chann...

The purpose of this paper is to study the main determinants of the bilateral real exchange rates for major oil exporting countries vis-à-vis the US dollar. Taking into account the impact of the real oil prices on real exchange rates, it may be observed that oil prices play a significant part in determining the terms of trade. In addition to the real oil price, two other fundamental factors that...
